Eternal Struggle for Uncorrupted Democratic Government
It is only right that you should know why, I a stranger become involved in your affairs.
Believe me, it is not because I am a justice of the Supreme court. It is
because , like all of you here, I am a citizen of this country. That is no
little honor. Men have fought revolutions, have died to be called citizens. As
citizens we carry a burning responsibility. It means when we elect to public office, we cannot do it as lightly
as we flip a coin. It means that after
we have elected them we can’t sit back and say our job is done, what they do
now doesn’t concern us. The philosophy of indifference is what the enemies of
decent government want. If we allow them to have their way to grow strong and
vicious, then the heroic struggle which
welded thousands of lovely towns like this into a great nation means
nothing. Then we are not citizens .We are
traitors. The great liberties by which we live have been bought with
blood. The kind of government we get is the kind of government we want. Government of the people, by the people and for the people can mean any
kind of government. Its our duty to make
it mean only one kind - uncorrupted,
free.

1943)පිටස්තරයකු වන මා ඔබේ කටයුතුවලට මැදිහත් වන්නේ මන්දැයි ඔබ් දැන ගත යුතු වීම නිවැරදි ය. මාව විශ්වාස කරන්න. මා එසේ කරන්නේ මා ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨාධිකරණයේ විනිසුරුවකු වන නිසා නො වේ. මා එසේ කරන්නේ, මෙහි සිටින ඔබ හැම මෙන් ම මා ද මේ රටේ පුරවැසියකු වන නිසා ය. එය සුළුපටු ගෞරවයක් නො වේ. පුරවැසියන් ලෙස හඳුන්වා ගැනීමට මිනිස්සු විප්ලව කළහ; දිවි පිදූහ. පුරවැසියන් ලෙස අප සතුව දැවෙන වගකීමක් ඇත. ඉන් අදහස් වන්නේ රජයේ ප්‍රධානීන් තෝරා පත් කිරීමේ දී, කාසියක් උඩ දමනවාක් මෙන් අපට එය කළ නොහැකි බවයි; ඉන් අදහස් වන්නේ අප ඔවුන් ව තෝරා පත් කර ගත් පසුව ඔන්න අපේ වැඩේ කළා යැයි කියමින් කරබාගෙන සිටීමට අපට නොහැකි බව ය. ඔවුන් දැන් කරන දේ අපට අදාළ නොවන්නේ යයි කීමට අපට නොහකි බවය. ඒ වූකලී සීලාචාර ආණ්ඩුවක සතුරන්ට අවශ්‍ය වන්නා වූ උපේක්ෂාසහගතව සිටීමේ දර්ශනයයි. ඔවුන්ට වර්ධන වී දුෂ්ඨ වීමට ඉඩ දුන හොත් මෙවන් සුන්දර නගර ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨ දේශයක් බවට පත් කළා වීරෝදාර සටන පුස්සක් බවට පත් වනු ඇත. එවිට අපි පුරවැසියන් නො ව ද්‍රෝහීන් වන්නෙමු. අප භුක්ති විඳින දැවැන්ත නිදහස් අයුතීන් අත් කර ගනු ලැබුවේ ලේ හළමිනි. අපට ලැබෙනුයේ අපට අවශ්‍ය අන්දමේ ආණ්ඩුවකි.. ජනතාව උදෙසා, ජනතාව විසින් ගෙන යනු ලබන ජනතාවගේ ආණ්ඩුවක් යන්න ඕනෑම වර්ගයක ආණ්ඩුවක් විය හැක. එය එකම එක වර්ගයක - එනම්, අදූෂිත, නිදහස් සහ එක්සත් ආණ්ඩුවක් බවට එය පත් කර ගැනීම අපේ වගකීම ය.
